Badlapur was a surprise for all fans of Varun Dhawan. This film is a revenge thriller directed by director Sriram Raghavan. Raghu is a happily married man, whose wife and son are accidentally killed during a bank robbery. Out of the two robbers, Liak is arrested but Raghu waits patiently for years to get his personal revenge for his family’s death from Liak.
Phobia will go down as one of Radhika Apte’s finest performances and there are quite a few of them. This disturbing film tells the story of Mehek Deo, who suffers from agoraphobia. She can’t interact with people unknown to her, and spends all her time in an apartment. However, her apartment becomes dangerous to her after she sees visions of the previous tenant being killed there.
Ugly starring Ronit Roy and Surveen Chawla, is one of Anurag Kashyap’s finest films. This film follows the dark and dirty crime thriller films, a genre that he has made his own. In this film, Ronit Roy is tasked with investigating the mysterious kidnapping of a small girl. However, the secrets he uncovers make him question his own morality.
Anushka Sharma unleashed her violent side in NH10, a thriller that almost feels like a horror film at times. Meera and Arjun are a couple going away for the weekend, where they encounter someone being killed by a gang and get down to help. Arjun ends up getting killed, and Meera is forced to run for her life, to protect herself from the gang that is out to kill her
6. Ragini MMS 2
Ragini MMS 2 is more like a horror film in the true sense, but it does have a gripping mystery. The film follows a crew that goes to an abandoned location to make an erotic film. However, the members from the crew are found murdered one by one. The remaining members of the film crew decide to solve the mystery behind these killings.
7. No Smoking
No Smoking, is one of Anurag Kashyap’s early films, which got appreciation much later. John Abraham plays the role of a chain smoker, who checks himself into rehab to get rid of his habit. However, he soon finds out that the rehab center uses extreme measures, like fear and psychological manipulation, as a method to cure their patients of their addiction, and he cannot escape easily.
Shagird is directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, and stars Nana Patekar as well as Anurag Kashyap, in leading roles. The film tells the story of a senior cop, Hanumant, who takes his junior under his wing to train him. However, the junior cop is against Hanumant, who uses corrupt means to get ahead in life. Meanwhile a gangster Bunty is planning a high stakes drug deal in the same area.
9. Monsoon Shootout
Monsoon Shootout created quite a stir, when it released India’s first interactive movie trailer, where you decide whether to shoot or not. The film itself goes through two different narratives, and is like nothing you’ve seen in Indian cinema before this. The movie is produced by Oscar winning producer, Guneet Monga, and was even screened at the Cannes Film Festival.
10. The Reluctant Fundamentalist
The Reluctant Fundamentalist, is not a Bollywood film, but stars Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, Adil Hussain, Imaad Shah, alongside Hollywood actors like Riz Ahmed. This film is based on the novel of the same name, that was shortlisted for the Booker prize. The film is directed by Mira Nair and it tells the story of a Pakistani professor who is caught in a hostage situation, involving an American citizen in Pakistan.
