Restoring our faith in the power to fight back, the ZEE5 Original crime-drama action-thriller series, Kaali Season 2 is slated to premiere on May 29, 2020. It tells the tale of Kaali, a helpless mother who races against time to save her only son, Sunny. She finds herself in Kolkata’s dark underbelly but fights back and learns the art of survival. Similarly, these Indian mothers have shown immense courage, determination and empowerment. 1. Zaaria Patni

Zaaria Patni’s story first reached the world via an Instagram post by Humans of Bombay. She suffered physical and mental abuse at the hands of her supposed prince charming, when she got married at the age of 19. The situation got worse when she became pregnant and her brutal husband sought custody of the unborn child. Fighting a six-year-long legal battle, Zaaria turned the law in her favour single-handedly. While doing so, she ended up making amendments to the divorce and alimony laws of the Indian Constitution.

2. Asha Devi

From a grieving mother, to a hardened crusader for justice after her daughter’s brutal gang rape and killing, this is the transformation story of Asha Devi Pandey, Nirbhaya’s mother. She braved through the court proceedings wherein she had to face her daughter’s rapists and murderers. After standing strong and fighting back for eight long years, the four convicts were finally hanged on March 20, 2020, at Tihar Jail. In her words, “Jab Nirbhaya chali gayi toh mere andar ki aurat bhi mit gayi aur ek maa khadi ho gayi!”

3. Ketika Kapoor

Ketika Kapoor is a mother, who single-handedly changed the childcare sector in India. Having embraced motherhood for the first time, and resuming office after a three-month-long maternity leave, Ketika faced the hurdle of unregulated day-care centres. This is when she decided that that world needs ProEves – a pro-woman initiative, to help mothers by providing them end-to-end childcare services. Today, ProEves works in synchronicity with over 500 centres to improve the difficult lives of mothers and their infants.

4. Vijaylaxmi

A resident of Gurgaon, Vijaylaxmi decided to step out of a dysfunctional marriage and turn her passion for food into a full-fledged profession. She is a single mother, whose culinary prowess won hearts. The people around her said that she couldn’t do it. They said that she didn’t have it in her. But then, she did! A domestic cook some years ago, she became one of the top 4 finalists on MasterChef India Season 2, without any formal training. She deems courage as the ingredient of her present success.

5. Dr Shila Dasgupta

Dr Shila Dasgupta never thought of penning her story down, until her elder son Dr Sai Kaustuv pushed her to write her incredible journey. She became the special mother of a special child who was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bone disease). She completed her research on stress-free living, through the Art of Spirituality, and received an honorary doctorate degree from The Diocese of Asia, Chennai. She is an India Book of Record holder by chanting the Hanuman Chalisa in 1 minute and 45 seconds.
