Ever since the novel coronavirus outbreak, a nationwide lockdown was imposed by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi to curb the COVID-19 pandemic. While the lockdown was announced only for 21 days at first, but it just kept extending further as new cases continue to crop up. And now, with each update, it only seems to make the week drag on for longer and longer. So, while you are coping with the self-isolation, here’s an off-beat list, which has some fabulous films that are sure to distract you from the stressful lockdown.

Thumbaa, starring Dheena, Dharshan and Keerthi Pandian in essential roles, is an adventure drama with a social message, leaving the audience poignant and entertained by the end of it. The plot of Thumbaa revolves around two friends, Hari and Umapathy, who are painters by profession. They change their motto in life when their paths cross with Varsha, a wildlife photographer. Directed by debutant Harish Ram, the film basically revolves around a group of individuals trying to save a tiger sanctuary from ruthless exploiters.
House Owner, which is directed by Lakshmy Ramakrishnan, is an endearing story about a husband suffering from Alzheimer’s and his wife. Featuring Kishore Kumar, Sriranjani and Lovelyn Chandrasekhar in the lead roles, the film tells the story of a couple (Vasudevan and Radha), who gets married (in a Brahmin wedding) early. Cut to 40 years later, we see the older version of the two. Nothing much has changed between them except that Vasu, who is a retired man, has developed Alzheimer’s while his wife continues to love him unconditionally, despite his ailment and the struggles that the couple face together.
En Aaloda Seruppa Kaanom
Tamizh, Anandhi, and Yogi Babu starrer En Aaloda Seruppa Kaanom is one of the most romantic films of the year 2017. The film revolves around a pair of lost footwear of Sandhya (Anandhi), which was gifted by her dear father. As her father, who works in Syria, gets kidnapped by the militants, the footwear is the last memory she has of her him. Sandhya and her mother meet an astrologer, who tells them to find the lost pair of footwear which will make her father return. Krishna (Tamizh), who has a huge crush on Sandhya, goes in search of the footwear as it means a lot to the girl. Overall, it’s a very unusual plot but the film is a delight to the audiences for its bizarre love story and hilarious touch.
Igloo, which is helmed by filmmaker Bharath Mohan, revolves around Shiva, a single parent, who lives happily with his twin daughters, Aishu and Vaishu. In the film, Shiva’s daughter Vaishu, who is curious to know about her mother Ramya, asks her father about it but he refuses to divulge any information. Situations, however, change when Vaishu meets with an accident and slips into a coma, making Shiva talk about his emotional life journey with his wife, who battled for her life while she was pregnant. Igloo is not a film but an experience that will melt your heart and make you look at life from a new perspective. The film features Amjad Khan, Anju Kurien, Mathew Varghese and Jeeva Ravi in the prominent roles.
Kurangu Bommai, a crime thriller, revolves around a golden idol worth Rs. 500 crore and how it impacts the various people who are trying to get their hands on it. Starring Vidharth and Bharathiraja, the film shows us how the need and greed for money dictate human behaviour. Director Nithilan Swaminathan makes an impressive debut with this film and proves his talent at realistic filmmaking.
Created by TV Chandran and starring Navya Nair, Cheran, Prakash Raj, Aari, Seeman, and Manorama in the lead roles, Aadum Koothu revolves around Manimekhala, a village girl, who sees things that are hard to believe for others. She sees these illusions like a movie being projected through her bangle which was gifted by her fiance. While we don’t know if Manimekhala’s visions are real but it would be interesting to find out what is the truth behind these visions. Stay tuned!
