Karthik Subbaraj, who has consistently managed to wow viewers, has now earned the tag of a maverick director. As our favourite director celebrates his 37th birthday today, let’s take a look at some of his best creations:
Bankrolled by Karthik Subbaraj, ZEE5’s Tamil web series Kallachirippu (which means Fake Smile) revolves around a troubled marriage that leads to a horrendous crime. A 24-year old protagonist (played terrifically by Amrutha Srinivasan) in an arranged marriage confesses to her husband that she wants a divorce. And she accidentally kills her husband in a fight and then calls her boyfriend for help. What’s interesting are the events that follow the accidental murder. The eight-episode series is directed by Rohit Nandakumar, who is also playing a pivotal role in the show. Rohit was roped into this by Karthik Subbaraj, who loved the former’s work in Aviyal. Besides Amrutha and Rohit, the series also features Vikas, Rajalakshmi, Uma, Maheswaran and Chennu Mohan in prominent roles.
Helmed by Karthik Subbaraj, Mercury, starring Remya Nambeesan, Prabhu Deva, Sananth Reddy, Shashank Purushotham, Deepak Paramesh and Anish Padmanabhan in pivotal roles, is a 2018 silent thriller movie. Set in a rural town affected by mercury poisoning due to an industrial mishap. The story revolves around five friends, who try to cover up the death of a friend who accidentally died by mercury poisoning. It would be interesting to find out what happens when the dead friend comes out of his grave. The film was appreciated by many. After all, a contemporary filmmaker has made an attempt to make a ‘silent’ thriller.
On the professional front, Karthik, in a career spanning just six years, has come a long way in Tamil cinema. Karthik, who made a name for himself with a series of short films, has now garnered more popularity with his highly acclaimed feature films like Pizza, Jigarthanda, Iraivi, and Mercury, among others. He also managed to bag one with the industry’s biggest superstar – Rajinikanth, for the film Petta, which emerged as the most successful Tamil film of 2019. Now that’s clearly an achievement, isn’t it? Stay tuned to this space for more updates on your favourites from the industry.
